The Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Olive Leaves against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
Authors
Abstract:
Background: It was shown that olive leave extract has antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral activities. The effects of OLE on herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) have not been systematically investigated yet. The aim of this study was to examine the in vitro effect of olive leaf hydroalcoholic extract (OLHE) on HSV-1. Methods: Virucidal effect and viral replication in Vero cell line were studied in the presence of various concentrations of OLHE applied at different time intervals using a standard plaque assay method. The 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50), 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50), and therapeutic index of OLHE were determined. Results: OLHE showed virucidal effect on HSV-1 in concentrations >1 mg/mL. The CC50 of OLHE for Vero cells and IC50 were 1.75 and 0.66 mg/mL, respectively. When applied to cell culture infected with the HSV-1, one hour earlier, OLHE showed no antiviral activities. When applied to the cells followed by the virus infection one hour later, or to the media containing the virus and the combination was added to cell culture one hour later, OLHE showed anti-HSV-1 activities at concentrations >1 mg/mL. Conclusion: OLHE has anti-HSV-1 activity likely due to the prevention of virus entry into the cells.

full textEvaluation of Potential Antiviral Activity of the Hydroalcoholic Extract of Lemon Balm L. against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
Background and Aims: Lemon Balm L (Lamiaceae) has been used in a variety of practical applications in medical sciences. Its antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) was investigated in cell culture. Lemon Balm hydroalcoholic extract was found to be non-toxic to Vero cells up to concentration 800 ug/ml and inhibited the growth and development of HSV-1 in dose-dependent mann...
full textThe Antiinfluenza Virus Activity of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Olive Leaves
The influenza viruses are major etiologic agents of human respiratory infections, and inflict a sizable health and economic burden. This study examines the antiinfluenza virus activity of hydroalcoholic extract of olive leaves (OLHE). Olive leaves were collected from gardens around the city of Shiraz, characterized, dried, ground to powder, and its hydroalcoholic extract was prepared. The ...
full textThe Effect of Cumin Seed Extracts against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 in Vero Cell Culture
Background: Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L. [family Apiaceae]) seed essential oil is reported to have antiseptic activity. Until now the antiviral properties of cumin seed extracts on viruses such as herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) have not been studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of aqueous, methanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts of cumin seed on HSV-1 growth ...

full textAntiviral effect of arginine against herpes simplex virus type 1.
We investigated the effects of arginine on the multiplication of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and the potential of arginine as an antiherpetic agent. Arginine suppressed the growth of HSV-1 concentration-dependently. Inhibition of HSV-1 by arginine leveled off at 50-60 mM, although the higher concentration was not suitable as an antiviral agent due to cytotoxicity. 'Time of addition' exp...
